How the Ulkaa Edu Rank works

Overview

Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology, or CUET (formerly Bangladesh Institute of Technology, Chittagong), is a public engineering university in Raozan Upazila, about 20 kilometres from the centre of Chattogram. The campus covers 188 acres of hilly, green land and teaches engineering, architecture and the related sciences in English.

Rankings

  • QS World University Rankings 2027: band 1401+, national rank 6. The 2025 edition had it in 1201-1400.
  • QS Asia University Rankings 2026: 385, national rank 10.
  • THE World University Rankings 2027: band 1401-1600, national rank 17. The 2026 edition was 1201-1500.
  • THE Asia University Rankings 2026: band 501-600, national rank 9.
  • Webometrics 2024: world rank 2968, national rank 14.
  • Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027: position 5 in Bangladesh with a score of 90. For positions 1 to 14 the position reflects Ulkaa's admission competitiveness assessment. CUET admits through an HSC GPA screen and its own test, so the applicants-per-seat indicator is treated as neutral for it.

The 2023 data year records 5,897 students and 348 teachers, 105 of them with a PhD. Teacher numbers were 304 in 2021 and 318 in 2022, with PhD holders at 96 and 101, so the staff has grown each year in the stored data.

In QS Asia the university stood at 357 in 2025 and 385 in 2026.

CUET was established on 23 December 1968 as Chittagong Engineering College, created through a Government of Pakistan initiative to meet demand for professional engineers. In 1986 it became the Bangladesh Institute of Technology, and on 1 September 2003 it gained full university status under its present name.

The stored founding year in our database is 2003, the year it became a university. The college itself dates from 1968.

A recent addition is the Sheikh Kamal IT Business Incubator, inaugurated on 6 July 2022, which occupies 25 acres of the campus and supports technology start-ups.

Admission

Entry to the undergraduate programmes is competitive. Wikipedia describes the written entrance test as one of the most intensive in Bangladesh, and says that from 2020 CUET coordinates admission with KUET and RUET, with about 30,000 applicants competing for 3,201 combined seats across the three universities.

Our stored figures for CUET alone show 13,942 applicants for 931 seats in 2025, or about 15 applicants per seat. We do not hold seat numbers for earlier years, so we cannot compare them.

Dates, seat allocation and screening rules change every year. Follow the official admission circular for the year you apply.

Programs

CUET has five faculties with 17 departments, according to its Wikipedia entry: Electrical and Computer Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Architecture and Planning, and Science and Technology.

Undergraduate programmes need 155 credit hours over four levels, while architecture takes five levels. Teaching is in English.

Ulkaa lists these undergraduate programmes:

  • Architecture
  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer Science and Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Urban and Regional Planning

This is not the complete department list, so check the official department pages for newer or smaller programmes. In the QS 2026 subject tables CUET appears in the 151-175 band for petroleum engineering, second among Bangladeshi universities.

In the QS subject tables, petroleum engineering is the one area where CUET has a stored placement, in the 151-175 band for 2026.

The campus is in hilly, wooded terrain near the Raozan Thermal Power Plant. Nine halls house students, six for men and three for women. Two libraries hold more than 52,000 volumes, and the campus has sports facilities, a medical centre, a mosque and banking services. Regular buses link the campus with the city.

The site is outside Chattogram city, so the bus service is the link for trips into town.

The incubator gives students interested in start-ups a place to work on projects alongside their degrees.
