How QS, THE and Ulkaa differ

Three rankings, three different questions

QS World University Rankings, published by Quacquarelli Symonds, put a large share of the score on reputation: surveys of academics and of employers. The rest comes from measures such as faculty-to-student ratio, citations per faculty member and the share of international staff and students.

Times Higher Education (THE) scores teaching, the research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry links across 18 indicators. It also uses a reputation survey, but leans more on publication data than QS does.

The Ulkaa Edu Rank asks a Bangladesh-specific question: how strong is each institution on the evidence available here? It combines what students actually choose (admission demand), research output, faculty qualifications, accreditation and the published QS and THE ranks. It is an independent ranking by Ulkaa, not an official one.

Webometrics, from the Cybermetrics Lab in Spain, measures something narrower: how visible and open an institution is on the web, including how much of its research is publicly available. It is useful as a signal of online presence, not of teaching quality.

Why one university can sit at different positions

The same university can be well placed in one list and far down another because the lists measure different things. A university that is strong in research output but small, or one with a famous name and little published research, will move between QS and THE by a wide margin.

Beyond the top few hundred places, QS and THE stop publishing exact positions and publish bands instead, such as 1001–1200. We show the band exactly as published and never turn it into a made-up single number. Bands also explain why two universities can share a band and still be ordered differently inside Bangladesh.

How to use these rankings when you choose where to study

World rankings favour research-intensive universities, so they say little about a good teaching-focused programme or a strong department in a university that is not ranked overall. If you are choosing a subject such as CSE or BBA, look at the programme, its accreditation and its graduates, not only the university-wide position.

Use the rankings to build a shortlist, then check the things they cannot show: tuition, admission requirements and seats, the campus, the teachers, and where graduates work. Our university directory puts the facts we have on every institution in one table.

Treat small differences as noise. A university ranked 12th and one ranked 14th in a national list are close; the order inside a band or a few places apart should not decide anything on its own.

How often the rankings are updated

QS usually publishes its world edition in June, THE its world edition in September or October, and QS Asia in November. Webometrics updates twice a year. We add each edition to this site once it is public and keep every earlier edition, so you can see how a university moved over the years.

The Ulkaa Edu Rank is a yearly edition, published once a year. Its method is published with the numbers, and a published edition is never edited afterwards: corrections go into the next edition and are listed with it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the QS and THE rankings?

QS puts a large weight on reputation surveys of academics and employers. THE scores teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry links, with more weight on publication data. A university can therefore sit at quite different positions in the two lists.

How many Bangladeshi universities are in the QS and THE rankings?

In the newest editions shown on this site, 13 Bangladeshi universities are ranked by QS World and 25 by THE World. Open an edition to see every one of them with its rank or band.

Is the Ulkaa Edu Rank official?

No. It is an independent ranking by Ulkaa from public and Ulkaa-collected data, and it is not affiliated with or endorsed by the University Grants Commission (UGC), QS or Times Higher Education.

When are the next rankings released?

QS World usually in June, THE World in September or October, QS Asia in November and Webometrics in January and July. The release calendar above shows the month we expect each one next.
